Park to Have a Family Picnic

by Linda
(Rahway)

Looking for a nice park to have a family get together. Preferably grills and shelter as well as a playground area for children's activities. I'm finding only places with large fees. Central Jersey is best location for us. Any help or advice is much appreciated.

Frank's Reply:
Hi Linda:

Unfortunately most decent picnic areas with grills, shelters, and other facilities for a group outing are going to charge a fee and a permit for the use of the facility.

I would suggest contacting the county park system in the areas your are willing to hold your outing for information on picnic areas, facilities, fees, and permits needed to hold your outing.

Not knowing the county you are interested in holding your outing, as an example, I have provided links (below) to the Middlesex County and Monmouth County Park Systems that offers information on the picnic areas for group outings:

Planning a company picnic in Northern NJ

by Lucy
(Edgewater, NJ)

I would like to plan a company picnic for about 12 people no more than an hour from Edgewater, NJ.

Do you have any suggestions?

Hi Lucy;

I can suggest you try:

1) Tomahawk Lake in Sparta, (973) 478-7490. It's a privately run facility with 200 acres that comes with complete packages and recreation.

2) Hidden Valley Club in Vernon,(973) 764-4200 It's a privately run facility in a scenic, mountain environment that offers corporate and special event picnics and outings.

3) Hacklebarney State Park in Chester, (908) 638-6969. It's a state park with over 100 picnic tables located throughout the park. They are available on a first-come first-serve basis. There are no picnic shelters located at Hacklebarney. Please note that alcohol is not permitted in New Jersey State Parks.

Regards,

I would like to know if I would need a permit to have a party at the park in South Mountain Reservation. It's for my son and there would be maybe 30-40 people there. I remember as a child going there and having cookouts with my family and we didn't need a permit but I'm not sure if things have changed since then. Thank you for your time!
