Camping with Our Dog Near Asbury Park
by: claudia

Hi; We're looking for a campground that will let us camp with our little, well behaved dog near or around Asbury Park/Ocean Grove NJ. It looks as if none of the state parks near this area allow dogs. Can you please help us? I originally thought Allaire State park allowed dogs, but it doesn't look like it. Are there other camping areas that are not too "resort like" It's just my husband and me, and our dog. Thank you.

Hi;

Unfortunately there are no dog friendly campgrounds in or close to Asbury Park. However, I can suggest four private dog friendly campgrounds within 20-25 minutes from Asbury Park:

Turkey Pond Swamp Campground
Freehold, 200 Georgia Road 732-842-4000.
There are no additional pet fees. The camping and tent areas also allow dogs. There is a dog walk area at the campground.

Pine Cone Resort
Freehold, 340 Georgia Road, 732-462-2230.
Dogs up to about 75 pounds are allowed; some breeds are not. There are no additional pet fees. Only one dog is allowed per campsite. The camping and tent areas also allow dogs. There is a dog walk area at the campground.

Butterfly Camping Resort
Jackson, 360 Butterfly Road 732-928-2107.
There are no additional pet fees. The camping and tent areas also allow dogs. There is a dog walk area at the campground.

Tip Tam Camping Resort
Jackson, 301 Brewer's Bridge Road 877-TIP-TAM1. There are no additional pet fees. The camping and tent areas also allow dogs.

Have fun,
Frank

Are there NJ State Campgrounds That Permit Pets?

by Ed
(Budd Lake, NJ)

Are there any State campgrounds that permit pets?

Hi Ed;
With a pilot program launched this year, campers can bring along their dogs and domestic cats when they book accommodations at the following Pet-friendly camping State Parks:

Brendan T. Byrne State Forest

(609) 726-1191
Family campsites 17 through 32

Parvin State Park
701 Almond Road
Pittsgrove, NJ 08318-3928
(856) 358-8616
Family campsites 45 through 56

Wharton State Forest
31 Batsto Road
Hammonton, NJ 08037
Batsto Office: (609) 561-0024
Atsion Office: (609) 268-0444
Batona Camp, Goshen Pond Camp, Hawkin Bridge Camp and Lower Forge Camp

The pilot program will continue until Dec. 31, 2009 and no additional fees will be charged for using a pet-friendly campsite.

At each of the pet-friendly pilot sites, dog and cat owners must comply with people-friendly guidelines, including leashing, proper cleanup and disposal of pet waste, and discouraging barking and other noise. A maximum of two pets per camping permit will be allowed, and owners must be able to show proof of required pet licensing and necessary vaccinations.

In addition, dogs and cats are prohibited from all buildings, swimming beaches and swimming waters, and any campsites or overnight facilities not specifically designated as pet-friendly.

Looking for a Campsite in Monmouth County

My boyfriend and I would like to go camping in Monmouth County for Memorial Day weekend. Ideally, we'd like to make a fire, cook dinner and quietely and responsibly have a little wine. I'm not really sure where to go.
Thanks so much.
Amy

Hi Amy:
As you may know, New Jersey state parks prohibit the use of alcohol. If you are looking to have a beer or a glass of wine with your meal, and why not, consider a private campground.
In Monmouth County, I suggest you check out:
Pine Cone Resort
340 Georgia Rd.
Freehold, NJ 07728
(732) 462-2230

If you may want to consider venturing out of Monmouth County, take a look at our Private Campgrounds page for information on private campgrounds.
Happy camping,
Frank

Planning A Camping Trip To Cape May, NJ

by Robert Dufour
(Laval / Québec /Canada)

I want to make A camping trip to Cape May with an arrival date the 26th or 27th of June for 3 adults with one tent. In a state park. For 2 weeks for us, and one week for my daughter of 19 years old.

A) Can I bring my dog? 50 pounds.
B) Camping nearest to the beach
c) My daughter of 19 years will return to Montreal by bus or by plane. What is the best and nearest?
d) Are there many mosquitos at this time of the year?
e) Can we make fire at camp?
f) what about the weather? And weather of the ocean?

Many tks,
Robert

Frank's Reply:
Hi Robert,
If you are looking for state park camping near Cape May, the closest state park with camping is:

Belleplain State Park
County Route 550
Woodbine, NJ 08270
(609) 861-2404
http://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/belle.html#camp
They are are pet friendly, and the closest state park to the ocean near Cape May

If you prefer to get closer to the ocean and would consider a private camp ground, I suggest you look into:

The Depot Travel Park
800 Broadway
West Cape May, NJ
(609) 884-2533
http://www.thedepottravelpark.com/index.html
Located 10 blocks from Cape May beaches, they have 240 tent and RV camp sites

Ocean View Resort
2555 Route 9
Ocean View, NJ
(609) 624-1675
http://www.ovresort.com/
Located between Atlantic City and Wildwood, they are three miles from the beaches.

The Depot Travel Park
800 Broadway
West Cape May, NJ
609) 884-2533>
http://www.thedepottravelpark.com/
Located 10 blocks from Cape May beaches

The answer to many of your questions depends on the facilities and rules of the campground.

For your other questions:
1) The closest airport to Cape May that would have direct flights to Montreal is Philadelphia International Airport. For bus service to Montreal, best bet is from Philadelphia, or Atlantic City with a connection out of New York City.
2) While the presence of mosquitos will exist, they normally are not troublesome this time of the year and can be easily dealt with using insect spray.
3) In the latter part of June you can expect an average daytime high of 80 degrees F, and an average low of 59 degrees F. In the latter part of June, you can expect an ocean temperature of 70 degrees F in Cape May.

Hope this helps,

Are generators allowed while camping in the park?
Reply
Hi Willie;
Yes! Portable generators are permitted within most of New Jersey's State park/forest camping areas. However, you may be required to turn it off during quiet hours which are 10 pm to 6 am or, if it is disturbing other campers in the area.

Looking For A NJ Campground
That Allows Alcohol

by John Mundell
(Hamilton, NJ)

I am looking for a campground for a group of about 20 people. Most people will be sleeping in tents but a cabin or two would be nice for some of the people who are not comfortable sleeping outside in tents. I do no want a campground with strict rules about quiet hours and the consumption of alcohol. A lake would be nice as well. do you suggest anything?
Reply:
Hi John;
Your best bet for finding a camp ground that will permit the use of alcohol is with a private campground. Check out this page for a listing of some of the better Private Campgrounds in New Jersey

Please note that all campgrounds have rules regarding the consumption of alcohol and loud music to ensure the enjoyment of the camping experience by everyone at the campground.

While they may permit the use of alcohol, this does not mean you can have a keg party for a group 20. You are advised to check with the campground before hand to ensure you will be able to accommodate your group's interest.
