AKI Sushi - Middletown

by Bob Salmons
(NYC/LBI)

New Modern Sushi joint. Has the NYC feel and quality!

The Chefs tony & David have been working together for years. We will be stopping here every friday on the way to LBI.
It is located on route 36 just south of Middletown in Romeo's Plaza. The exit on the parkway is 131 going south.

The locals are so lucky to have these guys everyday. You must bring your own sake or other booz but beieve me it well worth it.

If you sit at the Sushi bar (Tony built the bar and it is big and comfortable) tell Tony or david Sake Bob sent you!

Ama Ristorante Tuscana - Atlantic Highlands

Great ambience and Italian dishes. Prices are too high ($29 for a Pasta dish is way too steep). If money is no object, go and enjoy yourself!

Benzi Italian Restaurant, Old Bridge

by Mike S
(wharton,new jersey)

Ok, so the waiter was friendly, but did not know what clams oreganata are. Very weird. I've never heard of a waiter in an Italian restaurant not knowing what that was. Hello! When I received the "baked clams",they were awful. So was the calamari. How you can mess up this dish is crazy.

Now I knew this chain restaurant isn't authentic Italian but my date picked the spot. What a mistake. The restaurant was soooo below average, pathetic. I didn't even want to take any of the left over food home. Neither did my date. No soft music in the background, no ambiance, nothing.

Guys, don't bring a date here, boringggggg.I work in a restaurant, though not Italian. But wow, what a shock. Dare I say, The Olive Garden is better, including the price.

Bertucci's Italian Restaurants - Hazlet

by Samantha
(New Jersey)

This is a great New Jersey Italian restaurant. It has great service and fantastic food. It makes me feel like I'm almost in Italy. The music is also Italian. There is a kids menu and a fantastic grown up menu. This is a great family restaurant you can take the whole family. The prices aren't expensive it's actually pretty cheap. This is truly a family favorite.

Black Trumpet - Spring Lake, NJ

by Sue M
(Matawan, NJ)

The Black Trumpet, located a 1/2 block from the beach, is one of the best fine dining restaurants in the North Jersey Shore area.

The food is creative, well prepared, and their appetizers specials are sure to please.

Cafe Verde, Historic Phillipsburg
Restaurant Comment

After moving to the area we were left with below par food options and I thought all hope was lost until we ate at Cafe Verde. WOW!

It's small and very casual place where you feel like your with family. The restaurant is family run so they care. They are very friendly and ensure your every need is met, if you request it.

The portions are very large and the food quality is very good. I highly recommend it to everyone in the area. Prices are reasonable too.

They do have limited hours so call ahead.

Casa Comida, Long Branch

by Patty
(Neptune)

Casa Comida in Long Branch is my favorite Mexican restaurant. Their Tex-Mex food is better in portion size and prices than the chain restaurants. My favorites are the burritos and fajitas. The re-fried beans that come with the meals can't be beat. The staff is friendly and the service is prompt.

Fameous Dave's 5 Star BBQ Deserves To Be Called Famous

by foodilicious
(New Jersey & Philadelphia)

I could eat Famous Dave's BBQ everyday. I actually do eat it pretty often. Maybe 3-4 times a month. I don't normally eat a lot of meat, but this stuff is amazing and addictive. I have yet to try a salad or some other healthier option because their BBQ sauce and meats are so irresistable and they have the best beans and potato salad ever! My friends have convinced me to try a few other BBQ places with them, but hands down Famous Dave's has converted them in the end.

Lo Bello Restaurant Freehold NJ - Stay Away -

Never have I had such an awful experience. I went to the restaurant with 7 other people. Ordered the Soupa D' Pesce. I asked for the White Garlic sauce instead of the Marinara as per the menu. First it came out with a light red sauce - told them to bring it back. Next it came out with a tiny piece of lobster - a tiny shell no bigger than my thumb. I asked the waitress "where's the lobster"? She went back and asked for more and was told that's it. Then I asked her to send the owner Roberto over. He said that's all you get two pieces - which of cause there was only one. I told him to take the plate back & I was done. Do you think he came over again the entire night? Maybe offer something else? Nope. He went out of his way to avoid me. The waitress and the manager came over apologized profusely - but not the owner. At the end of the evening I had to have him called over so that I can tell him to his face that I would never come back and recommend people to stay away. Much, much better choices -

Lo Bello Restaurant, Freehold NJ

by Anthony
(New York)

I recently read a bad review on this site for Lo Bello Restaurant, but decided to go visit the place for myself. I enjoy eating out, and I've learned over the years that one persons dissatisfaction with a venue is definitely not the end all and be all of how good a restaurant is. Anyway, I went to Lo Bello Restaurant on a Friday night with some friends, and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. The interior reminded me of something i would see in SoHo not freehold, and the food tasted much better than i expected given the other persons review. The staff was great, we had a guy named Vito, (who looks a little like Robert DeNiro) who suggested which specials we should eat and what we should have for dessert. All were great choices. I had a huge grilled veal chop, my friend Nick ate a tuna special, and our friend Cheech ordered the rack of lamb. Everything tasted great. Dessert tasted as good as it was to watch it be prepared. Vito suggested the flambe over ice cream. He brought over a cart and prepared the whole thing in front of us, it was a great show complete with flames and all. The biggest surprise of the night honestly was the bill. We're used to going out and getting hit with bills in the $250 range (we're three guys who eat a lot) but our check from soup to nuts cost us only $40 a man which included a nice tip for the DeNiro look alike. I'll definitely be back and would tell anyone on this site to try places for yourself and don't always rely on reviews (even this one) to make a decision. Unless of course the review says that a restaurant ripped people off or something, than obviously you should take a pass. So in this restaurateurs eyes, Lo Bello Restaurant gets two thumbs up. I liked it even more because after dinner we went to grab some drinks at Metro Cafe which is right across the street.

Lorenzo's Restaurant - Freehold

by Drew
(Howell, New Jersey)

What a find.

I believe that we might have stopped in on the day before their grand opening when they were training, but they were very gracious and allowed us to be seated.

The bar is large and elegant. We didn't sit there, but we'll probably stop back for cocktails in the future.

After being sat in the dining room, we began with cocktails which were good.

They served us bruschetta while we perused the menu.

I ended up having the Chicken Sorrentino, and my wife had the lobster which she ordered right out of the large tank in the foyer.

The food was exceptional, and the service was beyond belief. I think part of the reason that the service was so good was because we were there before they opened and there were three servers. :)

There was a glitch or two later when we ordered a second drink but it was to be expected as they were just opening for the first time.

All in all, it was a fantastic experience, and we will be back.

Mister C's, Allenhurst = "F".

by Tom M
(East Brunswick)

06/30/08
After reading some rave reviews, my wife and I tried Mister C's Beach Bistro in Allenhurst. It was absolutely horrible.

My 16oz Black Angus steak was black, that's about it. It was no where near 16oz. It was as dry as the Sahara and may have been from a cow named Agnes.

My wife had the talapia. It was as hard as a Frisbee. We voiced our displeasure to the waitress. She agreed with our findings and provided a cup of house salad dressing for us to dip and moisten our food. I'm not kidding, that was it.

The only thing we found even close to the truth (re. the reviews) was the spectacular view of the ocean. You can't eat the view so don't waste your money!

Pino, Marlboro NJ

The owner would not allow me to use the coupon so I gave it to another group in the restaurant since I could not use it. As I walked out the owner cursed me out called me names and followed me out of the restaurant and keep cursing me out and calling me names, I had to run to my car to get away from him, I thought he was going to attack me as he was cursing and raising his hands to me. I could not believe I was treated in such a way. I have never been cursed at and called them names that the owner called me. I can not even write the names he was calling me.

South Street Victorian Restaurant, Freehold

by May
(Monroe Township, NJ)

This Restaurant is Closed

You gave a nice review of South Street Victorian - yet only 2 stars! How come? Most of our dining is done in NYC - restaurants in this area are poor to OK.

South Street Victorian was terrific the few times we've been. What would have given it 3 stars?

Tommy's Brick Oven Pizza in Red Bank, NJ

Last Friday was the third or fourth time my husband and I (this time we took my mother who was visiting with us for the summer) returned to Tommy's Brick Oven Pizza in Red Bank. I had a terrible experience from the time we sat down to the time we left the restaurant.

The waiter took our order. We ordered two appetizers, mozzarella and tomatoes and the wings. Within three minutes a waiter put the mozzarella and tomato platter on the table. Approximately 10-15 minutes later my wings platter still did not arrive. We asked the waiter; he answered by saying that the wings take longer. You would think that both appetizers would come out together so we could have eaten together. When the wings came out they also brought pizza out. Needless to say, I ate cold pizza.

When we were done with dinner, the waiter asked us if we wanted to see the dessert menu. We didn't want dessert but wanted a cup of coffee. They told us they don't serve coffee; we need to to down the hallway in the Galleria to get coffee in Tommy's Cafe. Why do you ask if we want to see dessert menu if you don't serve coffee.

Lastly, when we paid our bill; the waiter did not bring us the silver change (about 65 cents). The bill was approximately 35.45 (we got back $14.00 from a fifty dollar bill). I guess they keep the change at this restaurant. All the kept change will certainly add up.

I don't know if I am going to jump at returning to Tommy's soon !!! I guess I need to get over my not to pleasant dinner.

Tula Restaurant & Lounge
New Brunswick

by Marc
(East Brunswick, NJ)

Tula is reshaping the "other" part of New Brunswick. Located just 2 blocks from the Train Station on Easton Avenue (next door to Evelyn's), Tula offers classic ambiance and a light touch of elegance to lunch or dinner. Offering a full bar and wine list, including a dramatic 20+ seats at the long mosaic tiled bar, the food at Tula is exceptional for the price, and is significantly below its competitors on the other side of town (no names...). Featuring seasonal menu's, including steak, pork, salmon, shrimp, chicken, and pasta entree's, you won't want to skip any courses. With appetizers, salads, desserts, and other culinary delights, Chef Sam Fertik (CIA '09) and his crew are definitely succeeding with their new American cuisine with European and Mediteranean influence.
I have personally eaten there over six times for dinner, and sampled many of the dishes. They are also planning to offer prix fixe and chef tasting menu's this fall, and I will definitely be going back.
