Considered by many to be one of the best BBQ places in NJ, The Wood Pit is operated by outgoing and jovial co-owners, Lawrence Hackney (and Cook) and Kim Chandler.
The BBQ and brisket is served up sliced and cooked in an Old Hickory smoker that smokes meat at 250 degrees with indirect heat --- no open flames --- using pignut and sweet hickory giving off a more flavorful taste than mesquite. Chef Hackney's sauce is vinegar-based and is taken from recipes from his mother and grandmother who grew up in North Carolina.
The interior is spartan with yellow toned walls and brown hardwood floors. The restaurant is very small with several large tables that seat 6-7 people and 3 additional two seat tables. All of the tables are stocked rolls of paper towels.
Popular favorites include: the delicious dry-rubbed pork ribs, beef ribs, chopped and pulled pork, and brisket and chicken sandwiches.
About the only downside is the sub par collard greens -- bland.
The Wood Pit Barbecue has a take out menu, a catering service for private events, free delivery, and are open seven days/week.
