New Jersey Leisure guide is the largest single source of complete and impartial New Jersey restaurant reviews. Unlike other sources that review restaurants on the basis of a single visit by a restaurant critic, or on the basis of restaurant diners, our restaurant ratings and reviews take into account a wider audience and are the result of a compilation of many sources, including restaurant critics and diners who have eaten there. Varka Estiatoio is one of the best Greek and seafood restaurants in New Jersey. It has built its reputation on being able to master the fresh-to-table concept of serving up very fresh, exotic fish, shipped in direct from the Fulton Fish Market or flown in daily from Europe. The seafood is expertly prepared with simple seasonings to enhance the flavor. The interior decor is attractively done up in contemporary Greek styling, with white washed plaster walls, wide plank flooring, and dim glow of candlelit tables with white linen, in a spacious setting. At the far end of the dining room is a spotlighted model of a small Greek fishing boat (or Varka) filled with chipped ice, whole fresh fish, and a colorful selection of lemons, red and green peppers.. The bar scene is energetic and populated with trendy couples and singles. , and under the direction of Executive Chef George Georgiades, the kitchen staff expertly prepares and enhances the seafood with a simple and basic approach to using seasonings such as olive oil, lemon juice, fresh herbs. The menu selections are priced and served by the pound, and as a guide, 3/4 - 1 lb usually satisfies the average appetite. Their chefs will de-bone your fish unless otherwise instructed. When available, the popular dinner starters are: Charcoal Grilled octopus with red and yellow roasted Holland peppers; and Grilled Calamari stuffed with feta, tomato, fresh herbs and garlic. When available, the popular dinner entrees are: Barbounia/Rought, from Greece, a delicacy with sweet flavor and aroma; The Loup De Mer, from the Mediterranean, a white fish with mild, moist and tender flakes; and The Dover Sole from Holland, with a tender, firm texture with a fine delicate taste. Save room for desserts, they are delicious. Suggest having Uncle Nick's Homemade cheesecake served with preserved figs; and Baklava, a layered fillo with almonds, walnuts and orange honey syrup. About the only downside to Varka Estiatorio is the high noise level that resonates through the dining room during the peak evenings. If this high energy level leaves you a bit ill at ease, suggest eating at their out door dining patio during the warmer months. |
