Restaurant Review

Varka Estiatoio is one of the top Greek seafood restaurants in New Jersey, popular for special occasions and business expense account entertaining.

Owned and operated by Stavros Angelakos and Peter Mastorakos, they have built a reputation on being able to master the fresh-to-table concept of serving up very fresh, exotic fish, shipped in direct from the Fulton Fish Market or flown in daily from Europe.

Under the direction of Executive Chef Ubaldo Andres, the kitchen staff expertly prepares and enhances the seafood with a simple and basic approach to using seasonings such as olive oil, lemon juice, fresh herbs.

The menu selections are priced and served by the pound, and as a guide, 3/4 - 1 lb usually satisfies the average appetite. Their chefs will de-bone your fish unless otherwise instructed

The 180 seat spacious interior decor is attractively done up in contemporary Greek styling, with white washed plaster walls, wooden beams, wide plank flooring, large windows, attractive fish display, and a dim glow of candlelit tables set with white linen. At the far end of the dining room is a spotlighted model of a small Greek fishing boat (or Varka) filled with chipped ice, whole fresh fish, and a colorful selection of lemons, red and green peppers.

During the warmer months there is dining on the  52 seat outdoor patio.

The bar scene is energetic and populated with trendy couples and singles.

Save room for desserts, they are delicious. Suggest having Uncle Nick's Homemade cheesecake served with preserved figs; and Baklava, a layered fillo with almonds, walnuts and orange honey syrup.

If this high energy level leaves you a bit ill at ease, suggest eating at their out door dining patio during the warmer months.
