The Trinity and the Pope takes its name from the two common ingredients that define the differences between Cajun and Creole cuisine. Trinity is the bell peppers, onions and celery. The Pope is garlic.
Located on the corner of Mattison Ave. and Bond Street in Asbury Park in a restored bank building circa 1919, it has an old-world charm with a brick exterior and etched-glass entry-ways, a large fireplace with casual lounging couches, and a towering chandelier. There are two bars; at ground-level and an upstairs bar, both stocked with an extensive selection of wines and cocktails.
They serve up dishes in small (appetizer size), medium, and large (entree size) plates that are ideal for cost conscious diners who want to share, sample, and mix and match a variety of Cajun-Creole tastings.
During the warmer months there is outside dining. On Friday and Saturday evenings they have live bands.
Overall, the food quality and price value is good, though by New Orleans standards, the preparation falls short on some dishes. While the service is friendly, it can be slow, especially when waiting for a table.
At the Trinity and the Pope you won't find many kids eating there, though they are child friendly and offer a kids menu.
Unlike other sources that review restaurants on the basis of a single visit by a restaurant critic, or on the basis of restaurant diners, our restaurant ratings and reviews take into account a wider audience and are the result of a compilation of many sources, including restaurant critics and diners who have eaten there.
