The Murder of Emmett Till Screening at The ShowRoom
Considered a catalyst for America's civil rights movement, the murder of 14-year-old Emmett Till, and the events after his death, are explored in this documentary. While visiting the Deep South, Till whistled at a white woman, an act for which he was brutally killed. Activists got organized after Till's mother let national newspapers run pictures of her mangled son, the trial ended in acquittal, and the federal government failed to intervene sparking many activists to mobilize.
Education for Justice is hosting the screening in honor of Black History Month. EJF’s Director, Jim Keady, will lead a discussion about the film immediately following the screening. Educating for Justice aims to become the hub of social justice activity at The Jersey Shore. They provide online resources, study groups. lectures, grassroots campaigns and now film screenings to educate and organize local citizens to promote peace and justice. Director Jim Keady kicked off the film series at The ShowRoom last month with “Citizen King” and continues to carry out EJF’s mission with this month’s “The Murder of Emmett Till.”
