Restaurant Review

This attractive BYOB restaurant, located in the Mounts Corner Shopping Center on West Main St. in Freehold, serves up Northern Italian and sea food dishes.

Under new owners, brothers Mark and John Ackermann, this restaurant has undergone some changes, some for the better, some for the worse. For the better, there has been an improvement in service. For the worse, there has been a fall off in the quality of the food. While the menu hasn't undergone much change, the preparation of many of the selections have.

Seafood dishes, which had been a feature of this restaurant, have especially experienced a decline in quality. Stay away from dishes that feature crab cake or crab cake stuffing. The crab stuffing is bland and tasteless.

The most appealing feature of this restaurant is the decor. The decor is attractive with a Northern Italian ristorante feel to it. There are two dining areas that are elegantly done up with sand stone walls adorned with sculptured art work. Tables set with white linen and comfortable spaced apart. Although there are very small candles placed on each table, you will have to ask to have them lit.

The recommended starters are; the fried calamari, the hot appetizer for two; and the clams casino.

The recommended entrees are: Linguine con Vongole - steamed clams sauteed with garlic, olive oil, Italian herbs with red or white clam sauce served over linguine pasta; Tilapia Oreganata - with herbed bread crumbs glazed with Chardonnay beurre blanc sauce; Veal Rosino - veal medallions with asparagus & jumbo lump crab meat in a white wine cream sauce with vegetables; and Filet Mignon wrapped in bacon, topped with herbed bread crumbs and finished with a brandy demi-glaze sauce, rested on a Portobello mushroom;

The service is friendly and attentive.

They are family and child friendly with a large children's menu.

La Piazza is a popular restaurant for getting together with groups of friends and families and reservations are a must on weekends.
