Razberry's Banquet Center
Route 12, Flemington, NJ

St. Anna Greek Orthodox Church (formerly The Greek Orthodox Parish of Hunterdon County) and a non-profit organization, will host its 6th annual food and cultural festival, "OPA! BIG, FAT GREEK FESTIVAL, A Taste of Greece in Hunterdon County," at Razberry’s Banquet Center on Route 12 in Flemington on Friday, July 2nd (5-10 pm), Saturday, July 3rd (12- 10 pm) and Sunday, July 4th (12 -9 pm). The expanded three-day event promises food and fun for the entire family over the entire holiday weekend. Festival co-chairmen, Bill Panageas and Jorge Ferreira commented, "We are happy to once again offer a taste of Greece in the Hunterdon County area. Now in its sixth year, we are working hard to ensure that our festival continues to be one of the premiere cultural events celebrating ethnicity in this area of the state. We invite everyone to celebrate America’s birthday with some delicious foods from Greece—the birthplace of democracy!" The event is open to the public; admission and parking are FREE. Proceeds benefit the parish building efforts.
Area resident Deno Orginos, owner of Razberry’s Banquet and Conference Center on Route 12 in Flemington has once again, generously offered his site as the location for the sixth year of the festival. Razberry’s is conveniently located just minutes from the Flemington Circle and features Mediterranean style grounds. Also, this community-wide effort includes the support of several other local businesses who have offered to assist the parish. (For business sponsorship information, please visit the parish website, www.StAnnaGOC.org).
Once again, the parish will offer an assortment of delectable, ethnic cuisine and patrons can choose to dine on-site to enjoy the Greek taverna atmosphere, or take advantage of convenient take-out options. John Kaldes, Parish Council President and author of Made in Greece: A Guided Tour of Greek Cooking (Publishing Works, 2004) has developed a festival menu which features delicious, traditional Greek fare including pasticcio (pasta and meat casserole), moussaka (eggplant casserole), spanakopita (spinach and cheese pie), and souvlaki (pork or chicken kebobs), gyros, and roasted lamb. This year , he has added two new menu items: stuffed tomatoes or peppers (vegetarian style) and lamb sliders (a nod to the American hamburger in honor of the holiday). Mr. Kaldes has a passion for preparing and sharing his authentic Greek cuisine with others and will host two cooking demonstrations during the weekend on how to prepare baklava and spanakopita (Sat. and Sun. at 4 pm). His cookbook will also be available for sale at the festival with proceeds benefiting the parish (sample recipes available at www.madeingreececookbook.com). For those with a sweet tooth, the festival’s "Kafenio OPA" (coffee and dessert center) will offer a tempting variety of Greek pastries and Greek coffees. Top off a great lunch or dinner with one of their famous desserts including baklava (honey nut strudel), koulourakia (butter cookies), kourabiedes (almond shortbread cookies) and loukoumades (honey covered doughnuts). If you have never tried Greek food, this will be a great opportunity to sample traditional Greek fare," said Kaldes. George Staikos, noted sommelier and wine educator will select a variety of Greek wines representing the different regions of Greece which will be paired to especially enhance the dishes served at the festival (including Boutari and Achaia Clauss among others). Plans are underway to offer a Greek wine tasting during the weekend, making this event a destination for both food and wine enthusiasts alike. Refreshing Mythos Greek beer and domestic beer will also be served.
Along with the culinary attractions, a full schedule of cultural entertainment will be offered throughout the weekend. Continuous Greek music and scheduled folk dancing performances by the parish youth dance troupes (ages 5-17), led by former members of the Hellenic Dancers of New Jersey (a semi-professional dance troupe affiliated with the NJ State Council on the Arts). These groups will wear authentic costumes and perform traditional dances representing various regions of Greece. Visiting dance troupes from across the state have been invited to perform and dance lessons and contests will be held. To help celebrate the America's diverse ethnic heritage and the wide range of folk music influences, internationally known local author, Stephanie P. Ledgin will sign copies of her latest book, Discovering Folk Music that includes information about ancient Greek instruments and an interview with superstar Linda Ronstadt's brother Michael Ronstadt, who will make a cameo appearance at the festival. His band "Ronstadt Generations" will hold a preview performance at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 3rd to demonstrate the cross-cultural connections in music and promote their concert later that evening in Alexandra Township. Bouzouki players are invited to stop by for a spontaneous jam session!
Back for their second year, members of the "Greek Warriors" living history group based in the New York area who have appeared on the History Channel and at many promotional events across the tri-state area will pose for pictures, interact with festival guests, and provide a military history presentation with a short explanation of Ancient Greek warfare. Their appearance will be fun and educational for the whole family (especially those fans of the recent movie, "300 Spartans"). Dancers from AP Motion Dance Studio will perform special tributes to America and share other ecclectic performances throughout the weekend. Also, Sparkee of the Somerset Patriots will be stopping by for a visit! (Stay tuned for a full schedule of entertainment to be posted on the parish website the week before the event.)
The "AGORA" Marketplace, will include a shopper’s paradise of vendors offering a selection of fine and costume jewelry, hand-crafted items, clothing, and imported Greek specialties. Gourmet specialties include Greek extra virgin olive oils, coffee, honey, fruit preserves and spices. Religious displays and exhibits will also feature Byzantine style icons. Original oil paintings by a local artist will also be available.
For the kids (and the young at heart) the "Acropolis Kid’s Zone" and will offer fun, hands-on learning activities to introduce Greek culture including "Greek Alphabet Bingo " the "Hercules Photo Booth," "Make a Model Bouzouki" or "Make an Ancient Greek Warrior Shield". Plans are also underway to offer additional children’s crafts, rides and amusements, so this is an event that the whole family can enjoy.
