Restaurant Review

An unusual place for a French bistro in doo-wop North Wildwood, home of many Irish pubs and mediocre casual dining eateries, this hidden gem stands out with outstanding French cuisine in an unpretentious atmosphere.

Don't judge the quality of Claude's food from the outside or the interior decor resembling a country inn with it's checkered tile floors, and overly decorated lighting hanging from the ceiling, and many pictures on the walls. Seating takes place in the main dining room and an outdoor covered cafe dining area, both having tables set with white linen. Sophie's Bar, a new addition, now serves alcohol.

Chef -owner Claude Pottier, a Parisian, was professionally trained in France before coming to the States, and his wife Mary, a Philadelphian, serves as the pastry chef and hostess.

The meal begins with friendly and attentive wait staff bringing out hot rolls and tasty little baguette slices topped with a bit of foie gras.

For starters, when available, try the Coquilles Saint Jacques with corn, arborio risotto and scallops.

For dinner entrees, when available, try the Cote D'Agneau Tourangelle, three lamb chops grilled over white beans, tomato garlic, and parsley French string beans cooked in cream; or the Magret de Cunard aux poires Bigarade, organic duck breasts with red wine poached pear reduction of vinegar and honey.

Save room for dessert, made on the premises by Mary Pottier. They are sumptuous. When available, try the Creme Caramel; or the Chocolate Lava, a moist brownie mountain set in mounds of whipped cream with a dollop of chocolate lava oozing from the center of the dome.

Claudes is open from Spring through Thanksgiving.

They are child friendly with a kids menu.
