This web site does not normally review family chain restaurants, except when we feel that they are a cut above the rest in their price and food category. The Longhorn Steakhouse in Freehold, NJ fits into this category. While longhorn is not to be compared with the fine dining steakhouses, it is a good place to go for a casual night out with the family or a group of friends who enjoy good food at a very reasonable price. The atmosphere at this restaurant is attractive with a western motif. The walls are done up in earth tone colors and stone, with western paintings, copper, and cowboy knickknacks, and soft lighting. The bar is also set in an attractive stone setting with a few large display TV's for the sports minded. The recommended starters are; The Boneless Buffalo Wings, over a half pound of lightly-battered, fresh chicken breast pieces tossed in spicy chipotle buffalo sauce and served with celery sticks and bleu cheese dipping sauce; or the Texas Tonion. Jumbo Spanish onion petals, lightly battered, fried and sprinkled with Prairie Dust. Served with a tangy dipping sauce. The recommended dinner entrees are; Their specialty the LongHorn, a 20 oz. USDA Choice porterhouse with a New York strip and a large filet in one thick, tender cut, chargrilled over an open flame; or the Eye of Prime Rib, a choice of 12 oz. or 16 oz. of slow-roasted USDA Choice, fully-trimmed prime rib served one of three ways: Classic with au jus on the side, topped with red wine mushroom Bordelaise sauce or Spicy Western-Style chargrilled over an open flame. Save room for dessert. Try the Chocolate Stampede, it's two peaks of chocolate cake packed with six types of chocolate including chocolate mousse, fudge icing and chocolate shavings, served with vanilla bean ice cream, fudge sauce and whipped cream; or the Caramel Apple Goldrush with sweet, sliced apples tossed with cinnamon, butter and brown sugar, baked into a golden pastry shell and served warm with vanilla ice cream and Maker's Mark whiskey-caramel and raspberry sauces. Longhorn Steakhouse is very kid friendly where the kids are given crayons and coloring sheets. They have a kids menu with a good inexpensive choices. The service is very friendly and attentive. They serve a good variety of alcoholic drinks and their margaritas are great. |
