The Showroom, Asbury Park’s only independent cinema, is pairing with fellow Cookman Ave. business, the bookstore, words! and Asbury Park’s online literary arts magazine, Splash of Red, to launch a new BookFLX™ series. The collaborative venture will kick-off at The ShowRoom on January 17 with a screening of “Big Fish” followed by a Q&A, via Skype, with the book’s author, Daniel Wallace.
The ShowRoom, words! and Splash of Red will collaborate on a monthly basis to bring acclaimed literary figures to Asbury Park to explore the realms of book and film through interactive discussions with authors. Amongst its other creative endeavors, The ShowRoom is excited to provide an innovative platform for communication and comparison between these two cultural mediums.
Published in 1998, “Big Fish” was Daniel Wallace’s first novel. Renowned director Tim Burton adapted the story for the very popular 2003 film starring Ewan McGregor, Albert Finney and Jessica Lange. On January 17, Wallace will speak about the adaptation and his involvement in the film; he was a cast member in Burton’s movie, playing a familiar role as a professor at Auburn University.
Currently, Wallace is the J. Ross MacDonald Distinguished Professor of English at his alma mater, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His work has been published in more than two dozen languages, and his stories, novels and non-fiction essays are taught in high schools and colleges around the country.
The ShowRoom, words! and Splash of Red will continue to use interactive technology to bring literary greats to the independent cinema’s big screen. February’s BookFLX event has already been planned and will feature David Sterry, author of “Hos, Hookers, Call Girls and Rent Boys.”
For tickets, author information and more, please visit www.theshowroomap.com or call 732-502-0472. To learn more about Daniel Wallace, please visit www.danielwallace.org/about.html.

Sept 4 –Nov 13, 2010
This version is based on the opera of the same name. To a glorious Humperdinck score, Gretel, with the help of their pet duck, Suzy, outwits a very theatrical witch with a penchant for operatic arias and gingerbread. A clever bird, a frazzled sandman and a very edible gingerbread house add to the fun. There is an interactive pre-show with the audience and puppets before the main performance. After the performance the audience is invited to see behind the scenes and to ask questions about the performance.

JACQUES BREL IS ALIVE AND WELL AND LIVING IN PARIS
Production Conception, English Lyrics, and Additional Material by Eric Blau and Mort Shuman
Based on Jacques Brel's lyrics and commentary
Music by Jacques Brel
May 17 - June 5, 2011
Naughty, funny, dark, and romantic?this is a spectacular, twisty, and intoxicating revue of the work of singer-songwriter Jacques Brel. Over half a century after they were written, Brel's songs retain their edgy vibe in a show The New York Times calls ?a potent mixture of romanticism and cynicism, world-weariness and jaunty whimsy.? If you've seen it before, you've never seen it like this. If you've never seen it, it's about time!

“(It’s) an evening of rhythm, beats, sweaty bodies, melody, dynamic shape, and extraordinary precision. Tao is inspiring, uplifting and theatrical.” —The New Zealand Performing Arts Review
“Extraordinarily talented…incomparable muscular zeal.” —The Chicago Tribune
Great Family Event!
Athletic bodies and contemporary costumes meet explosive Taiko drumming and electrifying choreography in a remarkable display of precision, energy, and stamina. TAO delivers a young and vibrantly modern take on the venerable art of Japanese drumming—integrating gymnastics, rock music, expressive vocals, and an array of percussion from around the world. Though their art form is traditionally dominated by men, TAO creates a unique allure with both male and female performers, all of whom have undergone years of rigorous training to reach the highest level of virtuosity.

What Makes Ocean County’s Barnegat Light
An “America’s Coolest Small Town” Finalist
Less than three-quarters of a mile square with not more than 900 year round residents, Barnegat Light, found on the northern tip of Long Beach Island in Ocean County, New Jersey, is a tiny seashore town with a great nautical heritage and packed with things to see and do. About ¾ of a mile square, it is only 30 blocks long and three blocks across at its widest point, a sliver of sugar sand nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Barnegat Bay and bordering the Barnegat Inlet.
So, it certainly is small, but what makes it cool?
1. BARNEGAT LIGHTHOUSE STATE PARK
How many towns this size have a lighthouse? Climb the 217 steps to the top of state’s iconic red & white Barnegat Lighthouse for a magnificent view of the nine-mile-long Island Beach State Park, Barnegat Inlet, Long Beach Island, Barnegat Bay, the Atlantic Ocean and on a clear day, Atlantic City.
More unique, if you cannot or do not want to make the climb, visit the Interpretive Center and see the view from the top on monitors at the bottom via camcorders - a boon for tots, seniors and those with disabilities.
This is a great site for birding as it is on one of the four major American fly-ways. Migrations are in the spring and fall, but this is a great site for see waterfowl any time of the year.
2. U.S. COAST GUARD STATION
Pay tribute to “Sinbad,” the canine of questionable heritage, but with great heart, who actually served as a member of the U.S. Coast Guard and is buried on the property. He had his own medical record, uniform and battle station and became a celebrity during World War II. Sinbad was featured in multiple LIFE magazine articles, and was the subject of a book that recently was reprinted. He caused an international incident in Greenland (chasing sheep) and was busted in rank. This also is the site of New Jersey’s only Surfmen Unit. Of the 188 Coast Guard boat stations currently active only 20 are located in areas with surf conditions that require the skills of Surfmen. Of those, only five of the units are on the east coast. The Surfman qualification is the pinnacle of professionalism at these units. Few coxswains possess the skill and desire to complete the long and difficult training process. They are the service’s most highly trained boat handlers and are the only coxswains qualified to operate rescue boats in surf conditions, which are extremely dynamic, challenging and dangerous. .
3. BARNEGAT LIGHT MUSEUM
There are still town residents who attended the one-room schoolhouse that today has been recycled into the Barnegat Light Museum. The floor had to be specially reinforced to house the original 1,000 plate Fresnel lens that once topped the lighthouse. Stroll though the Edith Duff Gwinn Garden that surrounds the museum with its intimate walkways, antiques, statues, flowers and fountains, all maintained by the Garden Club of Long Beach Island.
4. VIKING VILLAGE
The statue of the fisherman triumphantly holding a fish above his head and the giant clam shell decorated with the flags of the Nordic countries, which pays tribute to the ancestors of some of today’s commercial fishermen, mark the landside entrance of the commercial fishing port of Viking Village on 18th St. at Barnegat Bay.
Take a behind the scenes dock tour learning about gill netting, scalloping and long lining and whatever the commercial fishermen are bringing to port this day. Be sure to view the building-long mural which depicts those activities.
5. ReCLAM THE BAY
Summer Fridays visit the clam nursery at 18th Street and the bay, which is operated by the ReClam the Bay volunteers. Learn how they are raising clams and oysters from the size of a poppy seed to juvenile size, then planting them in Barnegat Bay. See how your environmental habits at home impact their habitat. Ask for a ReClam the Bay map which will lead you on a scavenger hunt along the coast, spotting giant clams and other landmarks.
6. FOODIE?
The freshest seafood you’ll ever eat on land right from the commercial fishing docks can be found at Off the Hook take-out restaurant. Take your selection to the lighthouse where there are picnic tables near the water and you can view the boats traveling out the testy inlet.
If you prefer to cook your own, buy it fresh from Cassidy’s on the docks. Landlubbers will enjoy breakfast at Mustache Bill’s, one of only three recipients in New Jersey to be named a James Beard Foundation American Classic, Bill Smith has the soul of an artist and can “paint” images free hand with pancake batter on the grill. A favorite is Barnegat Lighthouse, but the likeness he did of Food Networks Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives host, Guy Fieri, during his visit was astounding. Check out the specialty of the house, the Cyclops featuring a fried egg with yoke in tact in the middle of a pancake. Better still, to see Bill’s spectacular work first hand, visit http://www.hulu.com/watch/52426/food-network-chef-guy-fieri-the-guy-pancake
7. FISHING
Count the ways you can catch a fish in this town:
Charter, deep fishing, party boat, surf fishing, kayak fish in the ocean or the bay.
8. WATER SPORTS
This is an ideal place to enjoy all types of water sports because of the diversity of choices between the spirited Atlantic Ocean and the calm Barnegat Bay.
9. NATURE TRAIL
Check out the nature tail, which parallels the beach around 12th street. See the still-standing mast on the beach between 10th and 11th street and know that it marks the remains of the Sea King that ran aground in a storm. The sand you stand on covers the wreck buried beneath. Read about it and other local wrecks in “New Jersey Shipwrecks 350 Years in the Graveyard of the Atlantic.”
10. STAY FOR WHILE
Take the Bed and Breakfast tour and savor the experience of elegant living with great water views, then pick one and stay for a while.
11. ACTIVITIES
Join in the summer monthly sandcastle-building contest. This tiny town has a big beach and a short ride on a tram will take you to it.
Seine in the Barnegat Bay.
Enjoy an evening sunset cruise aboard Miss Barnegat Light.
Take your bicycle and tour the town. The wide shoulders along the bay make it enjoyable and safe. If you didn’t bring your own, rent a bicycle from Ives Five Seasons or ride a surrey past the sandcastle homes in Loveladies. What’s the fifth season? It is September and October when the crowds are gone, but summer is still trying to hang around.
Take a Back Bay water eco-tour with one of the boat captains.
Garden State Parkway Exit 63 to Long Beach Island, turn left/north on Long Beach Blvd. and go approximately 10 miles, passing through a bit of Ship Bottom, then Surf City, and Harvey Cedars, a section of Long Beach Township (Loveladies/Long Beach) and then starting at 30th Street, Barnegat Light.

Introducing his engaging oral history, Fornatale, an author and longtime New York radio personality, admits that his attempt to parse fact from fiction regarding an endlessly mythologized pop culture milestone, the Woodstock Music & Art Fair, isn't always easy. It has been four decades, after all, and most of Fornatale's 110 sources spent that rainy August weekend in a hallucinogenic haze. But Fornatale does bring new stories to light, revisits old stories, and dispels some common misperceptions. Among others, festival production manager John Morris reveals how close the festival came to being shut down by the National Guard; filmmaker Michael Wadleigh explains the choices behind his groundbreaking documentary Woodstock; original Sha Na Na guitarist Henry Gross tells drinking stories featuring Jimi Hendrix; and attendee Jim Marion reflects on leaving the festival early and disappointed. Fornatale lets his subjects carry the story, providing cogent artist histories and conversational segues in this vivid portrait. -- Publisher’s Weekly

Brandi Carlile
You?ve heard her songs featured on ABC?s Grey?s Anatomy. Now hear Brandi Carlile live at the Pollak Theatre where she will be performing your favorites and songs from her newest album, Give Up The Ghost, Brandi?s third album which unveils her talents in their truest form. If the phrase ?give up the ghost? most often refers to death or dying, it can also be used to describe the passing of stages in life, of transformation. ?They say it takes you your whole life to write your first record, and in our case the first two records, and that you have to write your second record in just a matter of months. So we went into the songwriting process conscious of that, and really made an effort to just leave ourselves behind. We wrote about about life, the world, how we felt, how we will feel. In that sense, these songs are like time travelers in that they exist on a much more ethereal plane, and that?s what ?give up the ghost? means to us,? Carlile explains.
The recording of Give Up The Ghost offered new experiences including working with the likes of Elton John, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers multi-instrumentalist Benmont Tench, drummer Chad Smith, and Amy Ray of The Indigo Girls, all of whom contribute to the album. Among the growing legion of Carlile fans is Elton John. ?Brandi has an amazing voice,? he says. ?She?s a great songwriter and has a tremendous career ahead of her.?

Journey to Greece Through Dance
Greek Folk Dance in Celebration of Greek Independence Day
East Brunswick, NJ – The nationally famous Hellenic Dancers of New Jersey will celebrate Greek Independence Day on Sunday, March 21, 2010, at East Brunswick Vocational School, 112 Rues Lane, East Brunswick, NJ, with a performance of traditional Greek folk dance from 3 – 5 pm. Light refreshments will be available for purchase during intermission. This event is funded in part by the Hellenic Dancers of New Jersey, Inc., New Jersey State Council on the Arts - Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts, the New Jersey Historic Trust and the Coby Foundation, Ltd.
Advance reservations for this event are $25 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under. For reservations, please contact Eleni Banis, 908.281.5992; magaritsidis@comcast. Tickets the day of the event are $30 for adults; $20 for children 12 and under. Proceeds from this event will assist the Hellenic Dancers of New Jersey in continuing its mission of researching and presenting the numerous regional folk dances of Greece, and perpetuating Greek heritage in American. All donations are tax deductible.
Journey to Greece Through Dance delivers some of Greece’s most meaningful folk dances as the event celebrates Greek Independence Day. On March 25, 1821, the people of Greece rebelled against the Ottoman Empire and 400 years of Turkish rule, becoming the first country to break away from the tyranny of this empire.
Part one of the performance focuses on the dances of Macedonia in northern Greece. Hailing from the birthplace of Alexander the Great, these dances are proud, much like the people found in this region, and are executed with precision and poise. Dances like Kyra Maria, Kageleftos, Trita Pota, and Nizamikos which are featured in the program are rarely seen outside of the region.
Part two features dances from all over Greece, its islands, and Cyprus. Dances like Gaitanaki (Thessaly); Tsamikos (Epiros/Pan-Hellenic); Maleviziotikos (Crete); Kritikos (Rhodes); Stamna (Cyprus) and Letsina (Pontos) offer a lively look at traditional Greek life and the spirit of the Hellenic people. It is an event not to be missed!
Founded in 1972, the Hellenic Dancers of New Jersey is a group of young men and women, who are first, second, or third generation Greek-Americans, and are dedicated to perpetuating their heritage through enthusiastic performances of the regional folk dances of Greece. Under founders, Fr. Jim and Eleni Chakalos, over 300 folk dances, songs, and traditions from mainland Greece, its islands, Cyprus, and Asia Minor, have been preserved and passed on to two generations of Greek Americans. This outstanding troupe is nationally recognized for its presentation of Greek traditions and has performed at a number of local and national events including: Dukakis Presidential Rally, Inaugural Festivities for former President Ronald Reagan, Statue of Liberty Weekend Grand Finale, 20/20 ABC Television Program, Queens College of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies Benefit, O. Elytis Chair of Modern Greek Studies at Rutgers University Benefit, Union County College Folk Arts Festival, the NJ State Ethnic and Diversity Festival, for Eucumenical Patriarch Bartholomew upon his first official visit to New Jersey, and Greek Heritage Day with the Metrostars. Members of the troupe participated in the Closing Ceremonies of the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece and at the 2006 Centennial Epiphany celebrations in Tarpon Springs, FL.

Dr. Douglas Scott
How do archaeological digs at Custer Battlefield yield information about Saddam Hussein's Anfal Campaign?
Questions from the Battle of Little Bighorn as to whether the Indians were simply "bloodthirsty savages" or justifiably reacting to broken treaties and repeated Army attacks and whether the US government was justified in its response are universal and continue to plague American minds.
On October 2, 2010, Monmouth University will host Dr. Douglas Scott, foremost authority on conflict archaeology, as he answers these questions and explains how they lend insights into modern human rights and war crimes investigations.
Dr. Scott – History Channel personality, author, and the father of battlefield archaeology – will give a presentation on his findings at Little Bighorn Battlefield and show how this work played an important role in one of the Iraq High Tribunal trials against Saddam Hussein and his henchmen, at which he testified as an expert witness. Treating Custer Battlefield like a crime scene back in the 1980s, Scott developed the definitive approach to excavating and interpreting battlefields. His work was the first of its kind, establishing a new format for conducting conflict archaeology that is being used by archaeologists worldwide today. He has since conducted excavations at more than 40 battlefields and was awarded the Department of the Interior's Distinguished Service Award in 2002 for his innovative research in battlefield archeology.
Dr. Scott has authored numerous books about his archaeological work at Little Bighorn Battlefield, including the highly regarded “Bible” of archaeological digs at Custer Battlefield, Archaeological Perspectives on the Battle of Little Bighorn. Among many other achievements, he has appeared on both the Discovery Channel and the History Channel and has received awards from the National Park Service for his work.
The October 2 program will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Monmouth University auditorium; Scott will have copies of his book available for sale and signing. Admission is free. The program is sponsored by Freehold-based BRAVO (Battlefield Restoration and Archaeological Volunteer Organization) and is made possible through grants from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities and Prudential, as well as the cooperation of Monmouth University’s Department of History and Anthropology.

The story of Neil Simon’s The Sunshine Boys follows the attempt by a young theatrical agent to re-unite his elderly uncle, a former vaudevillian great, with his long-time stage partner for a TV reunion. Despite their celebrated reputation, the two old men have not spoken in twelve years. Besides re-mastering their sketch, the two men have numerous issues to work out before they are ready to return to the public eye.
The Sunshine Boys runs on the following dates: June 25, 26, 30 and July 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 10 at 8 p.m. and on Sundays, June 27, July 4 and July 11 at 7 p.m.
The Au Pair Man by the Irish author Hugh Leonard, was first produced and published in 1962. The play is a reversed-gender Pygmalion. In The Au Pair Man, Eugene, a rough Irish bill collector, becomes a sexual slave to Mrs. Elizabeth Rogers, a wealthy English lady, who tries to turn him into a gentleman. The play is a satirical allegory regarding the battle between Britain and Ireland. It is also a witty comedy of Anglo-Irish manners, full of amusing observations reminiscent of George Bernard and Oscar Wilde.
The Au Pair Man runs on the follwing dates: July 16, 17, 21, 22, 23, 24, 28, 30, 31 at 8 p.m. and on Sundays, July 18, 25 and August 1 at 7 p.m.

Porgy and Bess is the poignant story of a crippled beggar, the headstrong woman he loves, and Catfish Row—the South Carolina community that sustains them both. Composer George Gershwin seamlessly melds classical music, popular song, jazz, blues, and spirituals to create the quintessential American opera. Iconic songs include “Summertime,” “I Got Plenty O’ Nuttin’,” and “It Ain’t Necessarily So.” Featuring a cast of 30 and live orchestra, this monumental production has won acclaim on six continents, reaching a over 1.5 million people.

Making great art is never easy. Making it in perfect harmony might just be impossible. When one member of an esteemed string quartet is fired days before the most important performance of their career, the others must quickly find a replacement. Personalities clash, tensions rise, and the musicians grapple with how far they will go to achieve excellence. This play?about the shockingly difficult dynamics of a string quartet?has been called "vibrant", "astounding", and "truly remarkable." It is a passionate, smart, funny and moving story that resonates with the creative artist in all of us.

If you could leave your family, friends, and familiar surroundings behind to risk your life on a three-year, round trip voyage to Mars, would you go? In the new Facing Mars exhibition at Liberty Science Center, you'll have the chance to answer this question twice: once as you enter the exhibit and again as you exit with all the facts.
Facing Mars isn't just about visiting another planet- it's about determining whether we have the ingenuity to solve the challenges of deep space travel. Guests can experiment with 28 outstanding hands-on and full body experiences.
Guests will:
-fly over the Martian surface and see real hi-def satellite images of the Red Planet
-examine psychological profiles to build a flight team that won't quarrel or mutiny
-see how to grow food in space
-try out a special harness and walking surface to experience Martian "low gravity"
-see a rare Mars Meteorite
-check out before and after photos of your face in microgravity
-learn that in space there is no 911. Could you handle any emergency?
-take a whirl in the spinning chair, then try to solve a simple puzzle
-try to perform simple manual tasks in a low air pressure environment
After enjoying this challenging and thought-provoking exhibition, guests will have the chance to answer the question again-would they fly to mars? They may find themselves considering the question more carefully!

Dralion is the fusion of ancient Chinese circus tradition and the avant-garde approach of Cirque du Soleil. The show's name is drawn from its two main symbols: the dragon, representing the East, and the lion, representing the West. Dralion derives much of its inspiration from Eastern philosophy with its perpetual quest for harmony between humankind and nature. Suspended in time between the past and the future, Dralion is a celebration of life and the four elements that maintain the natural order: air, water, fire and earth. Innovation soars to new heights as it defies the laws of nature. Dralion is a dynamic performance that transcends the boundaries of the imagination and leads us into a dreamscape with a new and sparkling perspective.

The Horse Boy does more than chronicle Rowan and his parents' journey across the vast, wild landscape of Mongolia. It delves into the strange world of autism itself, the relationship between humans and animals and between different cultures and different ways of being (autistic vs. “neuro-typical"), and the nature of healing. Audiences hear the varied theories on autism from the experts in the field, well-known researchers of autism such as Dr. Simon Baron-Cohen of Cambridge University; Dr. Temple Grandin, recovered autist and professor of animal behavior at Colorado State University; and anthropologist and researcher Roy Richard Grinker of George Washington University. But above all, The Horse Boy tells the story of a couple that goes to the end of the earth to find a way into their son's life.

Alec Guiness & Albert Finney in the 1970 musical
Deep in your memory – or maybe it’s only a memory you wish you had – there was one Christmastime when you went to a big old theatre, the kind that looked like a palace, for a special holiday show. They played Christmas carols on the biggest organ you’d ever seen, and the sound was so beautifully intense it practically lifted you out of your seat. Plus you got to sing along to some of the songs. And then you enjoyed a holiday movie on the theatre’s enormous screen.
No matter if this is one of your best memories, or a memory you only wished you had – now you can enjoy it!

Live Concert & Sing-Along Featuring the majesty and power of the Loew's magnificent Wonder Morton pipe organ.

The dazzling, wide-screen movie musical version of Dickens’ classic tale. The costumes and sets capture the period beautifully, the direction is well paced -- and the acting is superb, most especially Albert Finney in the title role and Alec Guinness as the most memorable Marley the screen has ever had. Charming holiday fun for all ages.

Tabby’s Place will be hosting our third annual Low-Cost Microchipping Clinic and Open House:
Saturday, October 9th, from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Highlights of the day include: Introductions to the SuperCats of Tabby’s Place available for adoption/sponsorship; tours of the facility; mini-classes from our feline behavioral specialist, Nancy Meyer; interesting exhibitions; and a special Blessing of the Animals by the wonderful Father Dominic Nattunilam.
Tabby's Place: A Cat Sanctuary
Tabby's Place is a cage-free sanctuary that provides refuge to cats in hopeless situations. Our residents come primarily from public shelters where they had once been scheduled for euthanasia. This one-of-a-kind facility serves as:
*An Adoption Center, finding loving homes for cats;
*A Hospital, providing medical and surgical treatment for sick or injured residents;
*A Hospice, providing palliative care and a warm, loving environment for chronically or terminally ill cats to live out their lives in comfort.
Tabby’s Place does not turn cats away due to age, medical need, or “lack of adoptability.” It is, therefore, a safe haven for several older, chronically ill, or handicapped cats. These cats have special needs such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, or blindness. At Tabby’s Place, these cats are able to live full and happy lives with the medical care, love, and affection they deserve.
Unique Features of the Sanctuary:
*Provides communal living environments for cats, with plenty of horizontal and vertical space for exercise and play.
*Provides outdoor enclosures for cats to enjoy fresh air and sunlight.
*Contains special group rooms for cats who are FIV+, overweight, or on prescription diets.
*Contains an in-house medical facility.
*Uses specialized materials to facilitate cleaning and encourage a disease-free environment.

…A 5-town giant garage & tag sale event
A GIANT garage and tag sale is coming to Lyndhurst, NJ
Oct. 30 & 31, 2010
It will be held at the Flea Market and Collectible Show in the New Jersey Transit Station parking lot at 540 New York Ave., directly adjacent to the Shop Rite lot. It is a fundraiser for the Lyndhurst Methodist Church and the Lyndhurst High School Giving Tree.
The producer of this event is JC Promotions, Inc. a fundraising company that helps local organizations raise money by coordinating various events such as, flea markets, arts & crafts shows and street fairs. JC works with 50 area organizations and runs 100+ various events per year.
The BIG SWAP BONANZA is a 5 town –wide garage and tag sale event. JC is inviting residents from 5 communities to come and participate at a greatly reduced rate. The residents of Lyndhurst, North Arlington, Kearny, Belleville and Nutley are being offered selling space at the reduced fee of $40 for the entire weekend. Instead of running a sale at their homes they can bring their goods and items to this sale. They will get 3 parking spaces where they can set up their own tables, chairs and sell their merchandise. We make it easy and convenient. JC will be promoting the event with extensive advertisement to bring in the customers. Everyone loves a tag sale so it is expected to draw hundreds of people each day.
JC is also donating up to 10 FREE spaces for local organizations from these communities to participate gratis. It is a great way to raise funds for your group or your families. If any organization would like to create a kids area with a Halloween theme please call JC to discuss your ideas.
JC is also seeking local businesses to help sponsor this event. The sponsor fee is purposely kept affordable to attract interested businesses. The fee is $250 and sponsors will receive an exhibitor space, sponsor signage, your logo/name in most event promotion and a chance to meet and greet potential future customers. This high-exposure event is a great opportunity to showcase your company to the local community as well as help us raise funds. Businesses can also make a donation in lieu of participating on event day. We will have a sponsor table set up for our sponsors where they can use for give aways, business flyers and swag bags.
For information on this event and on how your organization can sponsor an event of this type or other events produced by JC please contact us.

NOSFERATU: THE VAMPYRE
Adapted & Directed by Alex Dawson
Based on the 1923 German Expressionist film by F. W. Murnau (in turn, based on Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula), Dawson's stage adaptation additionally draws on Chinese shadow-play, Shakespeare, and explorer/orientalist Captain Sir Richard Burton's translation of Hindu vampire fables to tell the story of Count Orlock, a rat-fanged Romanian looking for love even as he brings a boatload of Black Death to a German village. From the team that brought you last year's unsettling hit A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, with makeup by Tom Savini alumnus Dan Diana, the production, which opens with the terrifying image of the eponymous Nos suspended fifteen feet above the audience, will make even the swooniest Twilight fan forget RobPat and his teen beat vamps. 8 PM, Thurs - Sat, OCT 21 - 30 (special midnight show on Mischief Night). The Studio Theater @ MCC 2600 Woodbridge Ave., Edison, NJ 08818. All tickets $10. For more info and to purchase online visit NosferatuOnStage.blogspot.com.

A pizza dinner (free for children) will immediately follow the concert.
Alex & the Kaleidoscope Band has performed extensively in theaters, festivals, libraries and schools throughout New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and around the country with lively, interactive family-friendly entertainment. The group has had numerous media appearances, including New York’s CW11 Morning News, FOX 29 morning news in Philadelphia and Philadelphia’s World Café Live. In addition, Alex & the Kaleidoscope Band has performed in such reputed venues as the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo, Princeton Public Library, The World Bank, and the Arts Council of Princeton’s annual Halloween Parade performing for hundreds of families. Recently the band drew the largest crowd of the summer at the Princeton Shopping Center summer concert series.
Alex Mitnick, local music teacher and accomplished singer and guitarist, and Alan Bell, Philadelphia based artist and lyricist, began writing musicals for children focused on peace and communication at the Princeton Montessori School before releasing their first album in 2004. Since then they have released three albums for children that blend an energetic and eclectic mix of original world music with insightful and inspiring lyrics.
Focused on self-awareness and appreciation of the world around us, Kaleidoscope Songs has received over 14 national awards for incorporating fun and learning through the power of music. Awards include a Parents’ Choice Foundation Recommendation, multiple Parent-to-Parent Adding Wisdom Awards, Best New Artist and Best Album for Pre-schoolers from the Children’s Music Web, Best Album For Older Children (Ages 8-12) from the Children’s Music Web, Independent Music Awards BEST SONG for Children for Kangaroo!, Coalition For Quality Children’s Media KIDS FIRST Award, iParenting Media HOT PRODUCTS award and an entry of the week recognition from the NAPPA foundation.
The bands latest CD, Animals We Dream, got rave reviews.
“A myriad of multicultural rhythms and instruments highlight a peaceful safari to the animal kingdom that educates and informs in an engaging way.”
—John Wood, Kidzmusic.com
"Very enjoyable. Upbeat, catchy tunes, excellent lyrics with great messages. Each tune offers something different in terms of rhythm and pace - all very appealing to a youth audience as well as to adults. It doesn't dumb down to the audience. The lyrics alone are lovely poetry."
—Coalition For Quality Children's Media
“Kaleidoscope Songs is beautiful music blended with meaningful lyrics…. Parents and kids alike found the music to be enchanting, and very well produced. Guitars, percussion, French horns, trumpets, drums, pianos, violins and lots of children's voices make Kaleidoscope Songs musically rich and engaging for both children and adults. A must have for all households and each classroom.”
–CEO/founder of the Adding Wisdom Award and family author Jodie Lynn
Alex began teaching music to young children while in college at University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. Currently Alex directs the music program, for eighteen months to eighth grade, at the Princeton Montessori School in Princeton, N.J. where, since 2000, he has inspired kids of all ages through music and musical theatre productions. He is also a faculty member of the Princeton Center For Teacher Education where he directs workshops for non-“musicians” who wish to incorporate music into their classrooms.
Alex will be joined by the full Kaleidoscope Band which includes guitar, piano, bass, drums and two female singers who also play trombone. Tickets for the concert will be available at the door. Price: $10; Children two and under are free.

A metal band with an alternative-rock edge, Alice in Chains was among the biggest to emerge from the grunge scene that spawned Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. The group's dark, bitter songs occupy a musical landscape somewhere between Metallica's dense head bangers and Pearl Jam's grinding anthems.
After a string of shows in New York that sold out in minutes earlier this year, Alice In Chains has announced a May 20 show at the new MAC at Monmouth University.

The Provost Film Series focuses on the turbulent lives and changing identity of Russians in Moscow in the past four decades. All films are free and open to the public.
Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears (not rated):
Wednesday, February 3, 2010
4:30 - 7:15 pm
Pollak Theatre
Panelists: Provost Thomas S. Pearson and Associate Professor Katherine Parkin
Moscow of the late 1950s is the initial setting for this movie of three young girls out for love - the upwardly mobile Lyuda (Irina Muravyova), the secure Tonya (Raisa Ryazanova) and the head-over-heels Katya (Vera Alentova). The film re-engages the trio 20 years later, focusing on their varied life changes. Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears recieved the Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 1980.
Tycoon: A New Russian (not rated):
Monday, March 22, 2010
6:00 - 9:00 pm
Pollak Theatre
Panelists: Provost Thomas S. Pearson and Assistant Professor Kevin Dooley
Political intrique and total corruption within the so-called democratic Russia are brought to the forefront in Pavel Lungin's Tycoon. Beginning as an investigation into the assassination of one of the richest men in Russia, the story flashes back to Russia in the late 1980s, just after Perestroika has broken up the Soviet Union. Five intelligent Russian students, including one Platon Makovski (Vladimir Mashkov), abandon their academic careers in exchange for diving into the newly developing private business sector.
The Vanished Empire (not rated):
Monday, April 5, 2010
7:30 - 10:00 pm
Pollak Theatre with a reception to follow
Panelists: Provost Thoms S. Pearson and Dr. Andrei Kuteinikov
Love and youthful idealism are put to the test as the Soviet Union begins to crumble in this post-Soviet drama from director Karen Shakhnazarov, which nostalgically looks back on coming of age in a more stable and simple time. In the early 1970s, Sergei (Alexander Lyapin) is a Russian college student who proudly describes himself as a dissident, telling anyone who cares to listen that he wants to help bring democracy to the Soviet Union. Sergei's confident, outspoken manner has made him quie popular with the women on campus, much to the chagrin of his close friend Stepan (Yegor Baranovsky), who shares his political views but not his social skills.
